COMMISSIONERS SUPPORT FISHING HERITAGE EDUCATION PLAN
"Cornish Voices", the brainchild of the National Maritime Museum Cornwall and Cornish Theatre Collective (CTC), has been developed to support the National Curriculum and Cornwall County Council's 'Sense of Place' initiative to deliver a more relevant 'Cornish Curriculum' to local schools by celebrating the special relationship that Cornish people share with the sea. The first event in the series is "Hevva! Hevva!", a theatre performance being held at the museum which illustrates the booming pilchard fishing industry in the county in the 19th century. Between July 10 and 14, 240 pupils from Truro’s Penair Community Secondary School will be at the museum for workshops, activities and special interactive performances as part of their Curriculum Enrichment Week. Falmouth Harbour Commissioner Mark Sansom said: "We are delighted to be supporting this important programme which brings to life the historical importance and relevance of the sea to the society of Cornwall in a really exciting, appealing and innovative way which, we are sure will grab the attention of schoolchildren." In addition to the special workshops they will be running with schools, CTC and the museum will also be regularly showing free performances throughout the summer holidays, endorsing Cornwall’s rich fishing heritage to local families and tourists alike. Cornish Voices was also awarded Arts & Business New Partners funding. |
