PRESS RELEASE

PORT GOES HI-TECH

Two technology related projects have recently been completed to improve harbour monitoring capability and services to customers.

A charting package from Dolphin Maritime has been procured to display data gathered from the ports AIS receiver enabling real time monitoring of all AIS fitted vessels on an electronic chart background to be undertaken in the Harbour Office.

Deputy Harbour Master Mark Killingback who was responsible for procuring the package stated "The introduction of AIS has brought major benefits for monitoring commercial shipping using our Port Area. The latest software solution allows us to see the vessels position and all the relevant shipping information overlaid on an up to date Admiralty Electronic chart."

Visitors to Falmouth Harbour can now enjoy the convenience of a wireless "hot spot" to access the internet and e-mail whilst using the Visitors Yacht Haven or the near by anchorage.

The project involved the fitting of a radio receiver supplied by WiFiSPARK within the Amenity Centre which was ideally positioned to give good quality coverage to the required area.

Leisure Services Manager Barry Buist commented "Wireless hot spot facilities are increasingly demanded by visiting leisure craft. We see the provision of a hotspot here as part of our commitment to increase the attractiveness and quality of the experience for our visitors".
