Barbara Retire
After more than 17 years stirling service as Administration Officer,
Barbara Jenkins has decided to retire. Barbara joined the Commissioners
in 1984 and has witnessed many changes in the harbour and the organisation
since that time. She has played a key role in transforming the office
to deal with the administration of pilotage in 1989, computerisation
and a large increase in the financial and administrative workload
brought about by the increase in responsibilities assigned to harbour
authorities.
Taking over from Barbara is Barry Buist who has been working as
an Administration Officer in his family business since completing
his education. Barry is married and has recently become a proud
father for the second time.
Consultative Committee Formed
The Consultative Committee had its inaugural meeting at the end
of July. The Committee aims to give wide representation to harbour
users and has the power to put items onto the agenda for consideration
by the Harbour Board. The full Committee is given below. The initial
meeting dealt with constitutional issues and approved a constitution
to be included in the Harbour Revision Order. A further meeting
took place on the 18th September to elect a Chairman and consider
matters put forward by the Committee. Robert Toy was elected Chairman.
The Committee has the following members:-
Robert Toy (Chairman)
Cliff Brown
John Langan
John Bottomley (Harbour Commissioners Representative)
David Watkinson
Ray Jones
Peter Fox
The Committee decided that it will meet quarterly. As well as discussing
matters of concern to members, it will assist with the development
of policies and plans of the Commissioners.
Harbour Revision Order on Track
The objective set by Falmouth Harbour Commissioners to promote a
Harbour Revision Order reconstituting the Board in line with the
guidance given by the Government is close to being met. A draft
of the Revision Order has been publicly consulted and amended and
is now in the process of having final amendments carried out after
comments by the relevant government department. So far only three
HROs have been approved and we have made excellent progress towards
being amongst the first wave of Trust Ports to have their Orders
approved.
Another Busy Summer Season
Falmouth Harbour has enjoyed another busy summer season with visitor
numbers to FHC facilities holding steady in spite of increased competition.
Falmouth Week was another roaring success and the Boat Park Supervisors
were kept busy as it was followed immediately by the National Flying
Fifteen Championships organised by the Royal Cornwall Yacht Club
and Falmouth Water Sports Association.
Harbour Commissioners Required
There are two Harbour Commissioners whose terms expire at the end
of the year. The posts will be advertised in the press during October.
Anyone expressing an interest in advance will be provided with an
individual copy of the advertisements when they go to press. If
you are interested please contact the Administration Officer at

Falmouth Cruising to Success
Cruise ship visits for this year have been running at a record level
and the early signs are that next year will be even better. We will
have hosted 20 cruise calls by the end of the year and have had
plenty of enquiries for 2002. Falmouth will become a terminal port
for the first time during the course of next year. There are a number
of cruises planned from Falmouth to Mediterranean ports. With the
opening of the Maritime Museum due next June it is likely that cruise
liners will form an important part of the port's business.
Port Marine Safety Code Compliance Deadline
Looms
Borne out of the inquiry into the SEA EMPRESS disaster at Milford
Haven, the Government's deadline for compliance with the Port Marine
Safety Code is approaching fast. By the end of the year ports will
have to publish a statement showing how they will comply. Falmouth
Harbour Commissioners have brought in consultants Marico Marine
and Peter Nicholson to carry out some of the preliminary research
and risk assessments required.
Web Site Launched
Falmouth Harbour Commissioners now has its own web site - we are
at www.falmouthport.co.uk. Initially we have put on our visitor
information and charges. The intention is to extend the site to
include newsletters, strategy documents and other public information.
